“Conceal and Carry”

“Conceal and Carry”

A Cheerleader and men engaged: This is the core idea behind my next work that will take me into next year. “Conceal and Carry” will be the name of the series I hope I can work up many of these concepts before the wind stops blowing and my sails sag.

Going back

Going back

It’s interesting to go back and find the original sketches that inspired the creative act. I found this sketch I created as part of my design stage for the Vulcan Earth piece.

Side two Mountain

Side two Mountain

This side appears to have melted a little less into the underlying clay and shows almost no cone 6 glaze.  Not certain why perhaps this side of the sculpt was positioned away from the coils of the kiln? More layering between the surface pattern and the clay? Not sure. Here is, however, a breakdown as […]

Mountain Glaze unglazed

Mountain Glaze unglazed

By on September 5, 2018 in Completed Works with 0 Comments

When you fire cone 6 the clay really melts causing a fusion between the underlying clay and the surface design. If the surface isn’t thick enough it melts away, gets blurred, or gets really dark. Here is one example where the cone 6 glaze really wiped out the pattern and caused mostly a blurred effect. […]

Interesting Blues

Interesting Blues

By on September 5, 2018 in Completed Works with 0 Comments

I built up layers of different types of blue on top of the Vulcan figure, combining an electric blue underglaze with rubbed in blue mason stain using a frit as a binder. On top of this, I randomly painted a cone 6 clear glaze I had created last year. The results are very interesting. Where the […]

The build on Water is completed and now ready to be painted. Did a fire over the weekend and the pedestal which broke into pieces when in bone dry, survived. I used magic mud and pieced it all back together and then prayed. Everything seems to have worked out.

Using photos from cristina cordova’s recommended figure site I printed out a bunch of different angles close to my final actual size and then work from this source. I still mucked up proportions and measurements, but through refining the form over and over again I am really close to having something that nearly matches the […]

Been a long time… Long long, long long time–since I posted here. So it’s Spring finally and I do think we’ll be looking at warm weather finally. So it’s time to dust the studio and come up with a direction or plan for my next show. I’ve been working on individual stacked sculptures all winter […]

smoke and thinking color

smoke and thinking color

By on July 6, 2017 in Uncategorized with 0 Comments

The smoke turned out better than planned. It’s always a question before I start anything whether or not I can actually create the thing. So it was with the smoke. I put a dowling rod in the center to hold it, and it worked like a champ. I’m going to fire the sculpture with the […]
