People, Purpose, Process – the Three Ps

Or put another way, audience, narrative, material/technique. This is the thing that I hold in my mind from time to time. I love this new material technique. Working with industrial forms colliding with the waving forms. But what is the narrative? And do I care who the audience is? The question that came up this […]

Getting close now, concept sketch

I’m not planning on adding any figurative reference. the cloud and flow forms imply some type reference to the real and takes this work away from complete abstraction. I’m not certain I want the forms to point downwards, but this is still a WIP. I will probably apply tape and liquid friskit over some of […]

Inspector General Side View

Decided to take a step away from the larger piece I am working on to try sketching something out. I am pleased with the direction this went. Even for a little 5 x 3 maquette, this is inspiring me. I’m wanting to bring some elements back in, potentially that are related to the figure, since […]

Getting Close, Asking Questions, what now?

Getting Close, Asking Questions, what now?

By on August 26, 2022 in Build with 0 Comments

I occasionally go back and read my own blog as it is easy to forget day-to-day, why you are doing a particular thing. The current effort is to LEARN how to work this new material of plastics. So I have been cutting up pre-existing shapes using plastic models, the reshaping, gluing and then painting. The […]

Model Scratch Building – Lebeus Woods

Model Scratch Building – Lebeus Woods

By on November 25, 2020 in Build with 0 Comments

After a long hiatus from sculpting in the studio I have returned to 3d with small steps. Earlier this year I focused on a series of pen and ink drawings based upon Inktober setups. This worked really well for about four months, but then, as always, I became bored. I think I also became depressed […]

Manikin 1 month

Manikin 1 month

By on November 19, 2018 in Build with 0 Comments

Pretty much completed the manikin this weekend. That makes approximately one month to completion. That’s typical. I did start the torso of the street fighter and the torso of the cheerleader during this time as well. Next I’ll focus much more heavily on the street fight and sketch out the cheerleader. Expected completion dates are: […]

Conceal and Carry inaugeration

Conceal and Carry inaugeration

By on October 18, 2018 in Build with 0 Comments

After much effort to clean the studio and finalize works from last year I’ve decided to go ahead and begin the “Conceal and Carry” series. Been rolling some reclaimed clay and making cylinders, now it’s time to get on it. Started with a sketch for scale and proportion referencing. Used a measuring tool to map […]

Vulcans mountain

Vulcans mountain

By on August 13, 2018 in Build with 0 Comments

This part of Vulcans Mountain has been bothering me as to how to paint it. I put an underglaze coat of Electric Blue on then fired, but as I looked at it decided to go with a sandy color. Probably wasted some effort on the blue underglaze, but I am using water to spray down […]

Before and After

By on September 26, 2018 in Completed Works with 0 Comments

I was going to start “Conceal and Carry” but decided to try to get a few more existing works finished. This one has been sitting on the “todo” pile for quite sometime now, so here it is, before and after. It’s in the kiln as we speak getting another firing to finalizing some of the […]

Side two Mountain

Side two Mountain

By on September 5, 2018 in Completed Works with 0 Comments

This side appears to have melted a little less into the underlying clay and shows almost no cone 6 glaze.  Not certain why perhaps this side of the sculpt was positioned away from the coils of the kiln? More layering between the surface pattern and the clay? Not sure. Here is, however, a breakdown as […]

Mountain Glaze unglazed

Mountain Glaze unglazed

By on September 5, 2018 in Completed Works with 0 Comments

When you fire cone 6 the clay really melts causing a fusion between the underlying clay and the surface design. If the surface isn’t thick enough it melts away, gets blurred, or gets really dark. Here is one example where the cone 6 glaze really wiped out the pattern and caused mostly a blurred effect. […]

Interesting Blues

Interesting Blues

By on September 5, 2018 in Completed Works with 0 Comments

I built up layers of different types of blue on top of the Vulcan figure, combining an electric blue underglaze with rubbed in blue mason stain using a frit as a binder. On top of this, I randomly painted a cone 6 clear glaze I had created last year. The results are very interesting. Where the […]

Fire – Completed

By on July 9, 2018 in Completed Works with 0 Comments

Completed the firing and assemblage of the “Fire” lawn gnome. It’s a mess but the idea is clear. Finalizing the “water” sculpt over the next couple of weeks and then I’m open as to what comes next.

New Standing Figure

New Standing Figure

By on June 7, 2017 in Completed Works with 0 Comments

This is just using a red underglaze, applied in green and a second coat after bisque. The covered in a commercial clear glaze. Not too bad. I really like the standing figure that is somewhat abstracted. I tried out a dipped piece of cloth in slip cast material as well and it worked well . […]

The Tension

The Tension

By on August 26, 2022 in Philosophy with 0 Comments

My work should always be a tension between illustration and abstraction, dreams and reality, the sacred and the profane. This paradox is truth. Truth is holding two negating forces in balance as a yin and yang. Is this a battle or a cooperation. I saw the poster for the Broadway show “Wicked” and think , […]

The Gesture, the Illustraton

The Gesture, the Illustraton

By on August 13, 2022 in Philosophy with 0 Comments

You could call this “what is it , part II”. My approach to the work lies somewhere between the gestural and the reactive and the literal illustrative. I am thinking now about how my bomber painting came into being and my car painting. before they were crafted, I drew a little chaotic thumbnail that was […]

What is It?

What is It?

By on August 13, 2022 in Philosophy with 0 Comments

In my previous post I questioned how I want to treat the surface design and I have close to a pretty good answer on this, but now the quest is, what is the underlying story. I just realized that my works always will need an underlying story, it is what brings meaning to my effort […]

Awoke this morning with the question of purpose and direction for the latest work. I showed it in its current state to a a friend yesterday and it was met with Luke warm reception. First off I need to identify my audience, MY audience. Who will connect with ME. My work has been spooky and […]

Deconstructivism

Deconstructivism

By on August 11, 2022 in Philosophy, Sketch with 0 Comments

I realized this morning that I am deconstructing, but does this make me a Deconstructivist? I did some study this morning and one of the keys that hit me was embodied in this quote. Through the deliberate dismantling of structures, we create an environment that is both disturbed and fertile for new links and emergences […]
