Interesting Blues

vulcanDiagI built up layers of different types of blue on top of the Vulcan figure, combining an electric blue underglaze with rubbed in blue mason stain using a frit as a binder. On top of this, I randomly painted a cone 6 clear glaze I had created last year. The results are very interesting. Where the blue mason stain came into contact with the clear glaze the stain melted revealing a combination of the color of the clay with a more saturated blue. If I left the mason stain unglazed, the color was highly saturated. Noting also the Electric blue commercial underglaze, glazed and unglazed you can see how the mason stain can act as a highlighter.
