New forms

New forms

Getting inspired to develop porcelain cast forms these days. I’m pretty excited to try different sculptural shapes out. We’ll see where this goes. I’m still developing the figurative forms, but this is a nice break from the moody emotional works that are typical of my efforts.

2.5 hours

Up at 4:30, in studio by 5, out by 7:30. Although it doesn’t look like I made much progress, I actually spent a lot on refining time, trying to get the forms perfected and really smooth out the final vessel. Since this will be the model for a mold, i want it to be perfect. […]

3 hours

By on December 3, 2015 in Build with 0 Comments

I think I should be able to work faster than this, but I believe this has taken about 3 hours so far. I should be finished this evening however, if I put two more hours in, the base form should be completed. I then plan to spray with a terra sigilatta to make the surface […]

CAPTAINS

CAPTAINS

The idea is a more functional form that has an illustrated surface. All this in preparation for my application to the Piedmont Craftsmen in April. […]

Queen of the Ways

Queen of the Ways

By on October 13, 2015 in Build with 0 Comments

My first experience with a slip ball and it came out nice. The effect is to represent something akin to the set design from “Queen of the Night” in Amadeus, but also references the concept of stars and pearls. The Queen of the Ways represents a symbolic work that is the tragic collision of industry […]

Head and Magic Mud

Head and Magic Mud

By on October 5, 2015 in Build with 0 Comments

I wrote last time the the foot busted off of my near bone dry sculpture. I mixed up a batch of magic mud and then wrapped both parts in a web towel. When I came into the studo this morning the clays were perhaps too wet, but I decided to proceed. This is an experiment […]

busted

I was pulling the legs off of the wooden armature that I used to support the construction, I had noticed that the drying and shrinking was causing the clay to stick hard on the armature. But in pulling it off, I busted the foot off of the sculpture. I believe I remember in TJ Erdahl’s […]

Wrestling

Wrestling

By on September 28, 2015 in Build with 0 Comments

I love to wrestle with the problem. This is a physical activity where I gage my understanding of what something looks like against the realities of the figure. I think I may have crossed a bit of a line in setting this shoulder width. Even though the figure is clothed, this may be too broad […]
